Scientist who discovered the element- Arsenic was identified by the German alchemist Albertus Magnus.
Year it was discovered- 1250
Origin of the name- Comes from the Greek word Arsenikon which means pigment yellow orpiment
2 Most common uses- the primary use of arsenic is for the preservation of wood. it is also used as a doping agent in solid state devices such as transistors.
Other elements that react with arsenic- Oxygen, fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine
Compounds that contain arsenic- There are many.
Arsenic is an element that can be a poison. It is found in the ground water level of the earth. Arsenic can be extremely hazardous to a person's body.
Exposure to high levels of arsenic can cause cancers of the skin, bladder, kidney, and lung, and diseases. Arsenic and its compounds are also used in insecticides, weed killers, solid-state doping agents, and various alloys. However, arsenic compounds used as insecticides heavily contaminated the land around them. Arsenic used to be used for the preservation of timber. but the use of arsenic as a preservative for timber has led to environmental contamination. in 2002 the US EPA announced the voluntary decision of the Pressure Treated Wood Industry to phase out the use of arsenic-based wood preservative (CCA) in all products destined for the consumer market. CCA which was the most common wood preservative in the US contains 22% pure arsenic.
